HaBYT’s aim is to teach advanced theatre skills through its year round programme of productions, workshops and exposure to professional theatre locally and further afield.
HaBYT is Hawke’s Bay’s own theatre training company for dedicated young theatre-makers aged from 15 to the early twenties.
Since its inception, HaBYT has produced over 50 plays ranging from the classics to contemporary New Zealand theatre.
HaBYT’s aim is to teach advanced theatre skills through its year round programme of productions, workshops and exposure to professional theatre locally and further afield. Admission to the training company is by audition.
The core principle of the HaBYT company is whanaungatanga - the treasuring of connection, community and trust. Throughout the year, members of the HaBYT Company work closely together to develop their craft as actors and performance, with a key focus on voice, movement and character work. Company members work towards a staged theatre work which is performed later in the year.
Our whanau is important to us, and trips away are organised occasionally and when possible to help bonding and friendships flourish. Additionally, the Company tours nationally and internationally every second year.
Hawkes Bay Youth Theatre is a registered charitable trust, committed to actively nurturing a safe and encouraging creative space for young artists. It is important to us that young people feel comfortable fully immersing themselves in their creative work, laughing, bonding and pushing themselves beyond their creative boundaries.
