Movement Works with Sarah McAllum

When you move well, your brain works better. You sleep better. You stand taller. You have better balance. You feel stronger, You get rid of all those niggles, aches and pains. You have more confidence. Everyday activities become a breeze.

Tell us a bit more about what you do and more about the Feldenkrais Method.

I help you move better and feel better.

No matter what your age, stage or physical condition, it's never too late to begin.

I’m a firm believer that getting older can mean getting more awesome.

In classes and individual sessions, I act as your movement detective to help you uncover the underlying cause of your discomfort or tension. I then teach you to listen to your body cues (awareness) and simple exercises (movements) to retrain your movement. You rediscover how to move with ease, comfort and confidence.

The work I do is based on The Feldenkrais Method (rhymes with nice). This revolutionary approach uses a potent mix of biomechanics, movement, neuroscience and mindfulness to retrain your brain and movement patterns.

Tell us a bit more about the courses, classes, workshops you offer.

I offer fun group classes called “Not Yoga” Awareness Through Movement classes three times a week - two studio classes and one online.

The studio classes are held at my amazing studio in a beautiful orchard setting (it’s relaxing just turning up!). For those that prefer the comfort of home or are from further afield the online class option works really well (this is also available to anyone who misses an in-person class for any reason).

Throughout the year I also offer a variety of workshops such as “Pelvic Floor Restore”, “Breathe Easy” “Walking Well” and full-day wellbeing retreats.

Also in the works is a new online course on healthy and dynamic sitting - perfect for those who are working in an office or working from home. This will be available mid-2022.

For those that don’t like group settings or need help with a particular situation or movement limitation, I also offer individual hands-on sessions.

I am always happy to offer a 15-minute discovery call if you want to know more about what I do or whether it’s the right fit for you.

Who can attend?

Anyone over 18 who wants to keep their mobility and be more awesome!

The majority of my clients are women in their 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s who want to improve their mobility and get rid of creaks, niggles and groans. They want to keep moving easily and well so they can keep active, pain-free and enjoy things like gardening, going on holidays, running around with the grandkids.

What can people expect when attending your class?

“Not Yoga” Awareness Through Movement classes are more than just another exercise class. You experience how moving your body can transform your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

Classes are done lying down (on a mat similar to a yoga mat) or sitting on a chair. You do many different movement sequences to involve your whole body and brain.

Also rather than using effort, pain, sweat or strain, you improve through using slow, smooth and mindful movement. Think of it like "working in" rather than "working out".

Your story, your body and your way of moving are as individual as your fingerprints. So instead of modelling the movement, we help you learn to SENSE what you are feeling and what is working (or not!). You become the expert in you and how you move.

What are the benefits of attending the course/ class or workshops?

After the classes and workshops clients report things like feeling relaxed, taller, pain-free, lighter and younger! They are amazed at the difference in how they move and feel after a few movements.

And the great news is that you don’t leave those benefits at the door of class. You take them with you into your everyday life.

When you move well, your brain works better. You sleep better. You stand taller. You have better balance. You feel stronger, You get rid of all those niggles, aches and pains. You have more confidence. Everyday activities become a breeze.

Any further comments?

Movement is a really important part of your health. In fact you may have heard that movement is medicine. But that’s true only if you are actually moving well!
